As a consequence of January 27 being a Jewish lobby enforced Day of Remembrance, people everywhere have been able to gorge themselves on a feast of media reports concerning the guilt-inducing observance of Holocaust Memorial Day. While the concept of “anti-Semitism” continues to be aggressively deployed as a weapon to silence dissent against Israel — which also bars entry to foreigners supporting the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement goo.gl/xw7adm — the justified portrayal of fake news as the greatest danger to democracy has likewise been hijacked and the year 2017 began with an ignorant, mentally disturbed, racist, sexist, and psychopathic U.S President shouting “you are fake news” at a reporter, and ended with a suggestion that fake news didn’t really matter at all. During its first year in office the Trump administration unleashed a torrent of lies — some were minor, but most were blatant, outright deceptions — while redefining what is regarded as truth; while contesting clear facts to the point of transforming them into lies; and while consciously misusing the concept and phrase of “fake news” to undermine not only true reports, but also the very idea of truth itself. 

It did not take long for the Trumpean technique to be adopted by some Southeast Asian countries where government accusations of fake news have morphed into the actual arrest of journalists and the closing of news outlets across the region. Even some European nations — led by the French Republic goo.gl/b2tfsy — are also seriously considering jumping onto the bandwagon by introducing legislation to counter fake news particularly on social media network sites with Facebook having already admitted to deleting accounts at the direction of the U.S. and Israeli governments.

As someone who has been repeatedly blocked and had posts critical of Israeli crimes against humanity deleted by Facebook, this writer is not only familiar with the frustrating injustice of being arbitrarily censored on social media network sites, but also recognises that while some degree of internet content regulation is necessary, regulatory powers must not use “fake news” as an excuse to either censor alternative viewpoints or to suppress what is often the uncomfortable truth.
