Lesotho politician dies in suspect circumstances

May 14, 2017

Afrika Makakane, striving Lesotho opposition All Basotho Convention (ABC) politician for the Thupa-kubu constituency, has died in a traffic accident. But his family suspects foul play.

From the type of wounds he sustained, family members have voiced suspicion that Makakane was shot before his car overturned and rolled on Thursday night at Ha-Nchela in Thaba-Bosiu, around 30 kilometres outside the capital Maseru.

Makakane’s eldest son Tšepo, who is also the president of the National University of Lesotho Student Representative Council, said that although his father died following a car accident, sustained bodily wounds give an impression of bullet wounds; there were however no visible exit wounds, he said.

The son said upon arrival at Queen ‘Mamohato Memorial Hospital doctors referred his father for a head scan, he added “but the report showed no skull fractures except the shallow holes”.
