Disabled suffer hundreds of cases of violence a year, NSW Ombudsman figures reveal

July 24, 2017

People with disability are allegedly experiencing hundreds of incidents of violence, including sexual and physical abuse, a year, new figures from the NSW Ombudsman reveal.

Disability advocates say the figures strengthen the case for a royal commission into the sector.

The NSW Ombudsman has released updated figures into reviewable deaths of people with disability as well as allegations of abuse and neglect.

There have been almost 400 reviewable deaths since the Ombudsman started collating statistics in January 2014.

There were 1408 reportable incidents – which include reports of physical assault, sexual assault, neglect and fraud – between December 2014 and March 2017.

Of the reportable incidents, 663 were employee-to-client allegations, 522 were client-to-client allegations and more than 200 were unexplained serious injuries.
