Kenya claims al Shabaab lost 70, Kenya 9 during attack

January 28, 2017

In a statement issued Friday night, Kenya Defence Forces claim the opposite of what militants from al Shabaab published earlier on Friday. KDF states it repelled an attack by suspected al Shabaab militia at Kulbiyow, Somalia on Friday morning killing 70 of the attackers. KDF said it had lost nine soldiers during the attack.

Spokesperson Lt.Col. Paul Njuguna told Kenyans not to fall for al Shabaab’s propaganda, saying that KDF was forever on the watch.

“They sent false information to some social media sites claiming that they had killed 57 of our soldiers during the attack. Nothing could be further from the truth. We ran them out of town and right now we are pacifying the area,” Lt. Col. Njuguna said.

After an earlier blanket dismissal of the al Shabaab statement KDF has now mentioned numbers. The news would be a welcome relief to Kenyans with loved ones serving in Somalia. When KDF was last attacked in Somalia in January last year, the government was tight lipped, not telling the public how many soldiers were killed or taken captive.
