ISIS pulls out of Azaz frontline as the SDF enters Manbij city
June 08, 2016.
Starting early this morning, ISIS has withdrawn from several villages in
northern Aleppo after coming under increasing pressure by Kurdish
forces in eastern Aleppo around Manbij.
Effectively, rebels fighting under the banner of Jaish al-Mujahideen
have regained control over the villages of Kaljibrin, Kafr Kalbin,
Niyarah and Naddah. Subsequently, the siege on Mare’ has been lifted,
giving much needed breathing space to rebel forces near the Turkish
border.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) briefly entered a
neighbourhood in the northern part of Manbij city this morning but
retreated shortly after as their fighters came under heavy fire and were
attacked by a car bomb (VBIED).
Manbij city is still controlled by ISIS, but could be stormed again any minute now.
However, SDF fighters are continuing to clear the villages surrounding
Manbij as their fighters have the ISIS stronghold besieged from its
southern, eastern and northern flank.
Around 80 villages have been captured since the SDF began its Manbij offensive against ISIS little more than a week ago.
Adding further pressure to the Islamic State, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA)
has advanced into western Raqqa as government forces are leading a
separateoffensive.
